Augmented and Mixed Reality (AR/MR) applications that extend the physical world with virtual and multimedia components have emerged as promising technologies across domains such as education, healthcare, entertainment, retail, and transportation. Beyond specialized AR/MR head-mounted displays (HMDs), handheld devices (HHDs) like smartphones and tablets offer affordable and widely available access to AR/MR environments. However, despite the rapid technological advancements, real-world adoption of these applications remains limited.

Beyond addressing these technical challenges, the workshop will explore creative and domain-specific AR/MR applications, including

  • The helping car: Integrating screen visuals, tactile feedback, cameras, and sound for navigation and control
  • The caring phone/watch: Delivering alerts, opportunities, and contextual announcements 
  • Sports, games, and toys: Enriching recreational activities with immersive AR/MR experiences 
  • The seducing shop: Revolutionizing retail environments with AR/MR multimedia interactions 
  • The railway station: Facilitating navigation and information delivery in public transportation settings 
  • The government: Leveraging AR/MR for civic engagement and public services 
  • Parental control: Designing safer, multimedia-driven AR/MR applications for children 
  • Reading by ear: Enhancing audio-based interactions for accessibility and usability

In this context, will be dedicated to observations, concepts, approaches, techniques, development, and practice that allow understanding, facilitating, and increasing the advancements of AR/MR applications. Topics of interest for position paper submission include, but are not limited to:

  • AR/MR applications for handheld devices and head-mounted displays
  • User interfaces for AR/MR applications in handheld devices and head-mounted displays
  • New interaction techniques and modalities for AR/MR
  • 3D Visualization for AR/MR applications
  • Cross-device frameworks for AR/MR
  • User experience in AR/MR
  • Navigation in MR
  • Methodologies, frameworks, concepts, and tool support for cross-device AR/MR
  • Evaluation and user studies
  • Case studies and best practices
  • Translation between senses
  • Multimodal interactive art
  • Emerging AR/MR applications: the helping car; the caring phone/watch; Sports, games, and toys; the seducing shop; the railway station; the government; parental control; ready by ear; etc.  

 

Target Audience

The intended audience of the workshop is a mix of industrial and academic participants with experience in multi-media and/or multimodal engineering or art. We expect around 15 active participants. Submitted position papers should be 4 to 8 pages long (excluding references) using the ACM Master Article Submission Templates (single column). The organizers will carefully review the submitted papers. The submissions will be reviewed based on workshop relevance, academic rigor, innovation, and industrial or artistic applicability. Accepted position papers will be available two weeks before the workshop date at the workshop website, and all participants will be assumed to have read these before the meeting.

 

Workshop Activities

The workshop will have a strong focus on discussions and interactions between all accepted participants. The workshop will be held as a full-day workshop and consist of four 1.5 hours sessions.
